Blue River Community Foundation: 2022 Spirit of the Community Awards
2022 Spirit of the Community Awards
In 2016, Blue River Community Foundation (BRCF) introduced the Spirit of the Community Award program to Shelby County. The program allows for community members to shine a light on the extraordinary generosity and leadership of both an individual and/or business and a nonprofit organization who demonstrate community spirit through their service and giving to Shelby County.
The individual recipient for 2022 is Mr. Bob Wortman. As one individual so perfectly stated in their nomination for Mr. Wortman, “Bob exemplifies what community spirit and philanthropy are about. His gifts in Indiana are many and while not limited to Shelby County they are numerous and substantial. He is generous and a true gentleman.” Over the years, Bob has not only contributed financially to numerous nonprofit organizations but he has also offered his leadership, talents, and time. Bob has served as a member of several local nonprofit boards including the Shelby County Public Library Foundation, Inc., Shelby Senior Services, and Hancock Health Foundation. Through his leadership, Bob has brought the Rock Steady Boxing and Dolly Parton Imagination Library programs to Shelby and Hancock Counties.
Bob’s most recent contribution to the area was the development of the Wortman Family Foundation for Shelby and Hancock Counties. This grant program, administered by BRCF, will ensure that the Wortman family’s endowments will be able to support both counties, forever. “I want to ensure that I can support the communities that helped to support Sue and our family for so many years- in perpetuity,” Bob Wortman.
Mr. Wortman’s philanthropic heart and foresight have been a blessing to so many. His financial contributions will most definitely continue in perpetuity through his endowments at BRCF, and the many stories of his philanthropic activities, generosity, service, and leadership will be ones that are told forever.
The 2022 Spirit of the Community award for nonprofit agencies was presented to the Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women of Shelby County (BPW). The organization’s mission is to promote and support women- personally, professionally and politically. The group is continually seeking ways to advance working women everywhere. The women of this local group work tirelessly holding fundraisers to provide scholarships to local high school students and working women, and to offer other educational opportunities such as the Reality Store for Shelby County 7th graders. The program educates students about their financial future. The group’s philanthropic activities are many and serve high school students, college students, working women, and local nonprofit organizations. In early 2022, BPW was also awarded the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit Champion designation.
