Protecting Our Kids Mental Health During COVID

    Tuesday, September 8
    6:30 - 8:30 pm

As much as the upheaval of the past 6 months has affected us as parents and professionals, it's impact can now be seen on our children and/or the children we serve. Join us on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:30 for a topical mental health discussion led by Kristen East, MSW. Children with disabilities have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and may need unique strategies to cope. Kristen has been working with children with disabilities and mental health needs throughout the pandemic and will be sharing what she has learned during this virtual presentation.
Kristen East is a Behavior Consultant with Embracing Abilities. Kristen has spent more than a decade working with children and families with disability and mental health needs. Her vast experience includes working as a therapist in the school setting, working with children with autism in an ABA clinic, and getting to be a kid again providing respite! Kristen continued her education in the field and graduated from Widener University with her Masters in Social Work. She spends her free time advocating for mental health and loving anything Disney!

    Information for interested volunteers:

Volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with children ages 5 to 15 in the water.  Volunteers must be ages 15 or older.  Both adult and student volunteers are essential to the success of the program, so both are encouraged to apply!  No previous experience is required.  Volunteers must have basic swimming skills and be comfortable working with children of various types of disabilities under the direction of the adaptive swim instructor and other volunteer program consultants. Volunteers should be able to commit to at least 5 of the 7 Fridays of the program. If you cannot commit to that many sessions, you can participate as a substitute on weeks where we have a need.  Contact us for more information.

    Zoom Meetings: A Quick Tutorial

It's a reasonable bet that most of us have done at least one Zoom (or similar) meeting during this pandemic, but maybe you haven't and it seems intimidating! Never fear. It's easy once you get the hang of it. Here's a quick tutorial just in case.

First set up a free account on Zoom prior to the call at https://zoom.us/. You can do that via a computer or your phone.  If you prefer to use your phone or iPad for the meeting, you will need to download the app to your device.
A few minutes before the call, just click the link provided for your meeting.  If you do not get directly to the meeting room, you may need to enter the meeting ID. You will also be asked for the password to enter.

Once you are in the meeting, at the bottom of your screen you should see a place to turn on your microphone and your video. If things get too loud at your house, you can mute your mic as needed, but you can still hear the call. If your computer does not have a web cam, you can still hear, you just won't be able to appear live on screen.

On a computer the participants are displayed on the screen "Brady Bunch" style, called a gallery. On an iPad, you can select gallery view in the upper left corner of the screen. Phone screens start in "active speaker" view with additional participants in thumbnails at the bottom. You can swipe to scroll through participants. You can also swipe left on the active speaker to show more participants ( a smaller gallery due to screen size). If you keep swiping left you can add up to four participants in your view. Continue swiping left to view additional participants.

If you want to practice accessing zoom ahead of time just give one of our links a try. You will know you have been successful if you get a message letting you know the meeting hasn't started yet with the date and time. We can help talk you through if you contact us before the call has started (the earlier the better of course!).
