  • Shelby County Public Library: Shelby County Public Library looking for donations for upcoming improvements

    Dear Friend of the Library,

Major improvements are coming to the Shelby County Public Library in 2021-2022.

The children’s and teen area of the library will be completely renovated. This will entail adding a media production area, increasing the size of the story time and craft space, and modernizing the furniture / shelving in the department. We will also be painting and replacing the flooring throughout the main library, adding a covered walkway in the community plaza between our main facility and annex, replacing furnishings, and updating original cast iron piping and electrical boards. A General Obligation Bond was approved in April 2021 to fund the majority of this work. Look for construction to begin in September 2021.

As these plans are finalized, the library is excited to launch summer reading. This program will kick-off on Mon., June 7 (3-6pm *open house; Shelbyville Library) and on Tues., June 8 (2- 6pm *open house; Morristown Branch). Children, Teens, and Adults may register at the library or online at myshelbylibrary.org anytime beginning June 7.

Outside story times for children are now on the library’s calendar of events. These are offered at the library’s plaza, Morristown Community Park, and the Kopper Kettle. Library sponsored book discussion groups, crafting sessions, genealogy workshops, and special programs are regularly held in the community. You may also shop for used books anytime at the Friends of the Library bookstore and Morristown Branch during library hours. $5 bag sales are held for one week in the Spring, Summer and Fall.

New services: 1) The library recently added Hoopla-- a digital media service that allows you to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, phone or your TV. 2) Internet Hot Spots are now also available for check out. These offer free wireless access on an open network to patrons. 3) The Wi-Fi signal outside in the library’s plaza and parking lot is now stronger thanks to LSTA grant funds. 4) The Friends of the Library have established a partnership with Three Sisters Books and Gifts. New books are now regularly purchased from this local business through the Friends for the library’s collection at the Shelbyille Library and Morristown Branch.

Projects where we could use your help: 1) Funds are specifically needed to help cover costs for the proposed new library furniture for the main library. These will have easily cleanable fabrics and help transform the library’s interior. 2) If you are a crafter and would like to share your talent by leading a workshop, we would like to partner with you to create programming for our community. 3) If you have any new or gently used children’s books that you would like to donate, we are hoping to create summer reading children’s prize packs.

Thank you for considering your investment in the library! If you would like to give monetarily to the library, there are several ways that you can designate your funds. You can donate money to general operations, estate planning, in memory of a loved one, to the Friends of the Library for programs and special projects, and to the Library Foundation for capital projects.
We appreciate your support. Janet Wallace,
    Library Director
