Our 17th Season
...Building an Audience, One Seat at a Time.
STRAND WORK SESSIONSATURDAY JANUARY 27, 20249am - 1pmThis January has been slow on work. Sadly we did not have the finances to buy the material needed, but we still got a lot accomplished. Our final work session of the season is tomorrow. Come in and help, or just stop by and say hello!Earlier this month we hosted a video shoot on our stage. Check out the picture below. Here is what brought about this special session of music: (editor's note, we think it's cool!)In 1968 the rock band Led Zeppelin was formed. They would go on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They consisted of four amazingly talented musicians:(vocals) Robert Plant(guitar) Jimmy Page(bass/keyboards) John Paul Jones(drums) John BonhanLed Zeppelin became so huge that their fourth album, released in 1971, didn’t have a name or title. The only printing on the album cover was Led Zeppelin and four symbols, one to represent each member of the band, and it was only on the spine of the album cover.During that time John Bonham chose a Celtic symbol consisting of three interlocking circles that Bonham saw in Rudolph Koch’s “The Book of Signs”. The symbol loosely signified the holy trinity as well as several other variations of three. Even though he passed away in 1980, John Bonham became one of the most influential drummers in rock history. He is still revered by drummers today. John Bonham’s death and the fact that he was irreplaceable caused Led Zeppelin to disband.John’s son Jason Bonham followed in his father's footsteps and has become a critically acclaimed drummer. His band Bonham earned a gold record with their debut album “The Disregard Of Timekeeping”. Shelbyville resident and Strand volunteer Rick Hudnall was influenced by not only John, but by his son Jason Bonham.Rick became friends with Jason in the late 1980’s after meeting Jason at one of his drum clinics. In the mid to late 1990’s Rick became the manager of the Indianapolis rock band Healing Sixes. Through their friendship, Jason would become the drummer in Healing Sixes.Healing Sixes caught the eye of record producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley. Being a huge fan of Led Zeppelin himself, that drew his interest. Kevin gave Healing Sixes a recording deal, and they recorded their album “Enormosound” at the world famous Hit Factory studio in upper Manhattan New York with Jason on the drums. After its release Healing Sixes toured extensively throughout North America. They would even play a show for Rick Shelbyville in 2002. Soon after that show Jason joined the rock band UFO and Foreigner and was touring in 3 bands at the same time! In December 2007 Led Zeppelin would reunite for one show as part of the celebration of the life of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, with Jason filling in for his father on the drums. As The Strand was being restored, Rick wanted to help out. He used his music connections and friendships to help the Strand acquire professional live sound, lighting and video equipment at less than dealer costs. Rick is no stranger to the Strand. The Strand was used to film a commercial for Rick's new product he designed for drummers and fans of Led Zeppelin and John Bonham. Earlier this month Rick set up a complete drum set that was custom built for Jason Bonham on the Strand's stage. On the front of the bass drum was placed a 3 interlocking circle light made out of LED bulbs. The light can also be hung on a wall or used as a ceiling light. It is called the "L. E. D. ZEPPELIGHT."The light was used this week at The Mint in Los Angeles. The event was called “3 Rings”. It was a tribute to John Bonham with a Strand connection! Three famous rock drummers performed. It included Jimmy D’Anda (Bulletboys, Lynch Mob), Stephen Perkins (Janes Addiction, and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Velvet Revolver, Foreigner). They played 75 minutes of Led Zeppelin music. The light that originally premiered on his son's drum set at the Strand, was displayed on all three sets that night So the Strand had an LA connection this week.
We do cool stuff at the Strand and have lots of friends. Thank you to Rick, Jason, and Kevin for supporting us.We are getting ready to start our season. We will finish our work this week. Thank you for the support, see you at the Strand! These tickets are available online on our website www.StrandPAC.org
