    Our 11th Season

    Dear Strand Fan,

This weekend we are showing POLAR EXPRESS.   We will start after the Holiday Parade or 8:15 whichever is earlier on Friday.   Saturday the movie starts at 7pm. Saturday we will be joined by McKenna Hall who will sing before the presentation.

Polar Express is a wonderful story based on a real locomotive engine.   The original Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive was built in Lima, Ohio by Lima Locomotive Works.   Pere Marquette was the original operator. There is a sister engine Number 765 that is located in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.   The 1225 was retired in 1951 and was placed at Michigan State University. The engine has remained in East Lansing to this day.   The rebuild of the engine was started in 1971 and was finished in 1988 with 1225’s first excursion. The locomotive has since being across the the country and has completed its 15 year overhaul in 2013.   The 805,900 pound 1225 was returned to service after the $900,000 overhaul and is good until 2028.

The film is based on this engine.   The author of the book, Chris Van Allsburg, grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan and remembers the engine as a child.   The number 1225 or 12/25 fit perfectly with his story. The Disney animators sought out the original locomotive blueprints for the film we will see tonight.    The Strand is pleased to show this charming movie and it is presented by Major Health Partners.

Well that was a surprise!   The Shelby County Board of Zoning Appeals held their November meeting at the Strand this week.   We figured a few people would attend. Final count was 226. It was nice to see everyone engaged in their community.   It was equally nice to see the Strand on the Channel 6 news report!

This week was the culmination of a project started 6 years ago.   When we opened this Strand our fountain Coke equipment was mounted in the basement under the concession stand.   The syrup we use is called a Bag in a Box (BIB). Each flavor box is 53#. We have to carry those down the stairs each time.   The CO2 is cylinder is twice that weight. Our volunteers get tired of that process, and for good reason. We built an area off the entrance to the basement to hold the equipment.   Then came the long process of getting the move arranged. With the help if many people at Coke, the move happened Tuesday. This is a huge improvement to our operations. Thank you to all who helped!

We are preparing for the arrival of the Shelby County Players production of Rapunzel.  This production will run from December 1-9. There are many small things which the Strand does to accommodate the cast and crew of SCP productions.   We look forward to the play.

Our offices had damage this past week.  The seal under our skylight failed. This caused a leak and damaged our ceiling plaster and light well.   This was just painted! We will fix it in January and get it back to perfect shape. The south office windows are due to be reinstalled this week.  They have been out for restoration. The weather will prohibit us from doing any of the exterior work until spring, but at least the windows will be in like new condition and weather tight.

The 2019 season planning is wrapping up.   We hope to publish the entire 2019 event list in late 2018 or January 2019.   There are lots of fun things happening next year at the Strand.

In January we will have our annual “heavy maintenance” work sessions.   Be on the lookout for our posting on work sessions. They generally occur on Saturday mornings from 9 to noon.

Thank you for your support.  The Strand is a magical place as will be experienced this holiday season.   See you at the Strand!
