    Looking Back: September

A special thank you to Dan Kenyon for visiting and presenting the INALA plaques to our 2020 INALA Award winners.

Lindsay Watts – Outstanding Activity Director

Michael Tate – Caregiver of the Year

Bryan Friedrich – Outstanding Food Service Director

    Congratulations Mike, Lindsay and Bryan!

Our residents have been eating well! In September, Chef Bryan slow roasted three whole chickens overnight with white wine, browned butter, fresh lemons, and herbs from his herb garden to create this delicious special for our residents: Roasted herbed chicken sliders with pan-fried caramelized bacon brussel sprouts.

Thank you to everyone who voted for Woodland Terrace of New Palestine for the Indy Star's 2020 Best Things contest. We are now a finalist (in the Top 3) for the Best Assisted Living Community. The Indy Star will publish the entire special edition on October 30, so be on the lookout for that. Again, thank you so much for voting for us.

    Fair Fun
At the end of August, we held the New Palestine Indiana State Fair. We had a week long of fair fun – Games, animal visits, fake tattoo parlor, pie in the face fundraiser, kissing booth and amazing fair food. We had it all! The residents even got to exchange their tickets they won for real prizes! It was a blast.

    Support Group
    Parkinson's Support Group
    Wednesday, October 21
    2:00 pm

The Parkinson's Support Group is a place to obtain practical information and education on living with Parkinson's Disease (PD). This will be an informal time of sharing and discussing new tips and tools related to PD. This group is intended for both the individual with Parkinson's and family members/caregivers.

    Open Enrollment
    Open Enrollment Meetings
    Friday, October 9
    2:00 pm
    Summit

This is the time of year we start hearing more about Medicare, specifically the “Medicare Open Enrollment” period. There are many advertisements on TV, radio, internet, in the mail and you may have already received solicitations over the phone. This is the time you may change your Medicare coverage, including supplemental insurance and drug coverage. Open enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7, 2020.

At times insurance companies can be overly aggressive, so please proceed with caution. There are reports of people who changed their current coverage because of low monthly premiums, only to find out that they have an excessively high deductible. There are also instances of individuals cancelling their traditional Medicare coverage by mistake. Please review your current healthcare coverage to determine if any changes in coverage or costs have been made for 2021. If you are happy with your coverage, there is no need to do anything.

Our goal is to ensure our residents have the resources they need to make good decisions regarding Medicare benefits. SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) has several offices staffed with knowledgeable SHIP representatives to assist seniors at no cost in making good choices for your health coverage.

SHIP will be hosting an informative meeting on Open Enrollment in the Justus Senior Living Communities.

    Employee of the Month
Congratulations to our September Employee of the Month, Dave Johnson. He always has a can-do positive attitude and helps the residents with their maintenance needs, and then some. Dave is always willing to lend a helping hand. We are lucky to have him on our team!
