Shelby Community Band: Artistic Director/Conductor Position
The Shelby Community band was formed in 1973 (50+ continuous years!) and provides the greater Shelby County area with free musical performances throughout the year.
Due to our most recent director accepting a job across the county, The Shelby Community Band is seeking a new Artistic Director/Conductor. The ideal candidate for this position possesses a passion for community music making and is a great communicator on and off the podium. This individual is organized and engages in long-term planning. The Artistic Director/Conductor will also work with the collaborative and supportive Board Members to fulfill the mission statement of the Shelby Community Band. The Artistic Director receives a small monthly stipend.
Duties and Responsibilities

Attending and leading weekly rehearsals on Tuesday evenings

Planning each concert season, consisting of between 6-8 concerts per year

Selecting appropriate repertoire for the ensemble, including a wide range of musical style and difficulty levels

Assigning personnel within each section to appropriate parts to create a strong ensemble

Preparing conducting scores

Creating a positive environment conducive to music making for all levels of musicians

Serving on the Board of Directors as a voting member and attending monthly board meetings

Communicating with the ensemble and Board Members regularly, including weekly rehearsal information

Serving as a liaison with community members to promote concerts (radio, paper, social media, etc.) with assistance from the Board Members

Qualifications

Previous ensemble conducting experience with bands (required)

Previous ensemble conducting experience with community bands (preferred)

Bachelors degree or higher in Music Education or conducting (preferred)
