Special Education Instructional Assistant
Location: Triton Central Elementary School
Start Date: July 29, 2025
Compensation: This is a part time, 183 day calendar year position with up to 29 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with experience and follows the Northwestern Consolidated School District pay scale.
Position Description:
The Special Education Instructional Assistant supports teachers in providing individualized instruction and care to students with disabilities in an elementary school setting. They assist in creating a positive, inclusive and structured learning environment that meets the unique needs of each student.
Qualifications:
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher preferred.
• Experience: Prior experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, preferred.
• Skills & Abilities:
• Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting students with diverse needs.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Basic understanding of child development and special education principles.
• Ability to lift and assist with personal care tasks of students if necessary.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending and kneeling.
Responsibilities:
• Classroom Support:
• Assist the special education teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Provide one-on-one or small-group instruction to students.
• Adapt and modify lessons under the teacher’s direction to meet student needs.
• Support students in developing academic, behavioral and social-emotional skills.
• Behavioral Support:
• Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as directed by the teacher or specialists.
• Supervise students in various settings, including classrooms, playgrounds and lunch areas while fostering independence and self-advocacy skills among students.
• Physical & Personal Care Assistance (as needed):
• Assist students with mobility, positioning, transitions, safety and well-being of students with physical or medical needs.
• Provide support with toileting, feeding and hygiene, as required.
• Collaboration & Communication:
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling student information.
• Communicate observations and progress to the special education teacher and team.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
