• Seeking Support for Shelbyville Central High School Greenhouse Project

Shelbyville High School is looking for funding opportunities for a greenhouse system that would greatly benefit our agriculture program and its 180+ students.

This greenhouse would provide hands-on learning experiences, support Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE) projects, and serve as a fundraising tool for our program. Currently, our students are growing produce indoors using two vertical growing towers and 12 hydroponic table units. Our goal is to expand this initiative by providing fresh produce for our school cafeteria. To prepare for this, we have completed a course on food safety and handling, ensuring our students gain real-world agricultural skills.

To bring this vision to life, we are seeking funding for:

    • Greenhouse facility (Greenhouse)
    • Solar panels to offset energy costs
    • Concrete pad for structural support
    • Plumbing and electrical installation
    • Furnishings and equipment
    • Labor and necessary permits

At this time, we are not asking for a direct donation but rather seeking feedback on your interest in supporting this project. Additionally, if you know of individuals or organizations that might be willing to help, we would love to connect with them.

While we have applied for several grants and are awaiting responses, we are also reaching out to community members and businesses who share our passion for agriculture and student growth. Contributions from donors will be recognized with plaques in the greenhouse, as well as an invitation to our opening ceremony and recognition in the local newspaper.

We are currently in the early stages of gaining approval and would like to demonstrate strong community support to our school board. If you are interested in learning more or know someone who may be able to assist, please feel free to contact Kay Huntsman via email or phone.
