Duke has been performing for almost 50 years. He will bring his familiar brand of blues/rock to our stage. Tickets are available online or at the door. This will be a great opportunity to hear Duke in the wonderful acoustics of the Strand. The concert starts at 7:30pm.COMMUNITY TREASURE SERIES: Conversations in Local History is Wednesday May 1, 2024. This free event highlights stories and issues relevant to the Shelbyville/Shelby County area. This year the series debuts with an exciting topic...the history of the Shelby County Public Library. Did you know our library is rooted in steel? We will learn about Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) and so much more! We hope to see you there. Doors open at 6:30pm and the event starts at 7pm.Don't forget our HARRY POTTER FILM SERIES starts on Tuesday May 7, 2024. Strand film guru Jason H. says "This is a great way to kick off our Tuesday films. This is a chance to see all 8 Harry Potter films on the big screen. You can even sit in the balcony!" The series starts with the first film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Jason writes:
"Harry Potter is an average bespectacled eleven-year-old boy who has lived with the Dursley family ever since his parents died in a car crash. For some reason, the family has always mistreated him. On his eleventh birthday, a giant man named Rubeus Hagrid hands him a letter telling him that he has been accepted as a student at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry learns that his parents were wizards and were killed by the evil wizard Voldemort, a truth that was hidden from him all these years. He embarks for his new life as a student, gathering two good friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger along the way. They soon learn that something very valuable is hidden somewhere inside the school and Voldemort is very anxious to lay his hands on it."****This week we hosted POETRY NIGHT on Wednesday. Over 50 people attended. We normally present poetry with an intimate setting in our cabaret area. We almost had to move it to the main auditorium! A great problem to have. Thank you to Barbara and Carolyn from THREE SISTERS BOOKS and GIFTS for organizing this event.
The SHELBYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND performed on Thursday night. These young musicians sounded fantastic! From Route 66 to a Night in Tunisia... the band took us on a tour of the great big band hits of yesterday and today. We had a wonderful audience of not only the students' families but also a core group of community members who came for a great night of entertainment.
****Did you know our Strand Volunteers write poetry too? Poetry started with David F. reading a poem written for the Strand by Alaskan poet Ken Waldmen. Our own Melissa R. put her name on the list and presented this year. We love our volunteers!****We have updated our ticketing system with many events. Take a look at our website to see all that is happening. We have a full schedule until the end of the year. 2025 is already starting to fill and we have bookings for 2026 and 2027! This is what it takes to operate a venue like the Strand. We have so many fail as they are crushed by the weight of operations. Steve F. and David F. knew this over 20 years ago when they set forth the path the Strand would take.
We are still here, now in our 17th performance season! This is all possible because of the tremendous support of our volunteers and our patrons like you. Thank you! Hope to see you at the Strand! If you would like to volunteer for an event reply to this email, join our Facebook Volunteer Group, or call 317-395-3318
