Our 17th Season
...Building an Audience, One Seat at a Time.
Dear Strand Fan,For the first time in 819 year Central Indiana is in the path of a Total Solar Eclipse. The Strand Theatre has been around for a long time, but we didn't exist in 1205 the last time an eclipse darkened our skies. We hope to be around in 129 years for the next total eclipse in 2153. To say this event is rare is an understatement.
The Strand is ready to welcome our local patrons and for those visiting our area for the eclipse. Our programs are centered around making the weekend memorable.
We start off with our regular Friday Night Frights Film Series on Friday April 5, 2024. THE NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984) is perfect to set the mood for the eerie event we are about to experience. Released in 1984 it is part of the 40 year anniversary of that year's films.NIGHT OF THE COMET is a science fiction film directed by Thom Eberhardt. The story revolves around a comet passing close to Earth, resulting in most of the world's population being turned into dust or zombies. Two teenage sisters, Reggie and Samantha, find themselves among the survivors due to being inside steel-lined rooms during the comet's passing. They venture out into the deserted city and encounter various challenges, including scientists conducting experiments on survivors and evil government operatives. Along the way, they meet other survivors and ultimately must fight to survive against both zombies and human adversaries. The film blends elements of horror, comedy, and post-apocalyptic adventure. The film starts at 7:30pm and tickets are available at the door. The following events on Saturday and Sunday are all FREE OF CHARGE. We want everyone, from near or far, to experience the charm of our historic venue.SPACE JAM (1996) - Saturday April 6, 2024 at 1pm.WIZARD OF OZ (1939) - Saturday April 7, 2024 3:30pmTOTALITY 24 FILM FEST - Sunday April 7, 2024 1pmDARK SIDE OF THE MOON - Live on stage - Sunday April 7, 2024 - 3pmWIZARD OF OZ (1939) - Sunday April 7, 2024 - 7pmWIZARD OF OZ (1939) When you think of a classic movie in a classic theater, this is the movie that comes to mind. The film deals with themes that embody what we believe at the Strand. First is the significance of home: Dorothy is trying to find her way back home to Kansas. This emphasizes the importance of home and the idea that no matter how adventurous or exciting life may be, there is no place like home. After all, in the end Dorothy says something that every Strand volunteer believes: “If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own backyard.” Shelbyville is our own backyard.TOTALITY 24 FILM FEST - The Strand Theatre invited filmmakers across the globe to submit films. Each film was limited to 4 minutes and had to have Totality as a theme. All submissions will be shown, with the winner of the juried show named. The winner will have their film shown at the Skyline Drive-In at 3:08pm during the period of totality! (Editor's note: That is cool!)DARK SIDE OF THE MOON - ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE - Local musician Scot Shrader will perform Pink Floyd's iconic album. This acoustical performance will play the album in its entirety. What better way to lose yourself in the cosmos than in the Strand! This is performed live on stage! The Strand will be open for tours all weekend long. We will be selling popcorn and even have our Strand Popcorn in a box to take with you. Come by and say hello.***
Crush Bon Jovi was a blast last Saturday. The concert was fantastic and everyone had a great time. Well, almost everyone. One patron wasn't very nice to our volunteers. Sad.Thank you for all the support. Enjoy the eclipse. We'll see you at the Strand! If you would like to volunteer for an event reply to this email, join our Facebook Volunteer Group, or call 317-395-3318
