Our 17th Season
...Building an Audience, One Seat at a Time.
Dear Strand Fan,We have 2 events today! We start with a movie that is part of the Super Monster Movie Fest. Patrons from several states descend on the Skyline Drive-In for a one a year homage to monster movies. Needless to say all films are after dark, so how can Joey G. and the crew at the Skyline show a matinee...the Strand of course! Saturday at 2pm we are showing KRONOS from 1957. This movie is a black and white science fiction movie. One source says "Kronos has been widely praised for its above-average storyline and its farsighted portrayal of the consequences of over-consumption of both natural and man-made resources; it has achieved minor cult status as a result." Above average....wow! Still seeing films like this on the big screen are a treat. The movie starts at 2pm and tickets are available at the door.
***Tonight live on stage is THE ULTIMATE McCARTNEY EXPERIENCE. This concert will feature the music of Sir Paul throughout his career. WSVX did a fantastic interview with Tony Burlingame who portrays Paul. You can listen to Giant FM news director Johnny McCrory's interview below:If you are a Beatles fan, or a fan of Paul McCartney the Strand is the place to be tonight. The concert starts at 7:30pm. Plenty of tickets are available at the door. We hope to see you there!***During the concert last Saturday night Strand board members Ron Bush and David Finkel took some time to plan the upcoming installation of our Digital Cinema Projection System. Along with the projector and entirely separate sound system is being installed. (Warning tech talk ahead)Ron designed the audio system at the Strand. Currently we use that system for our films. The new system will have its own system. It will be tailored for theatrical film programming. The Strand is a very acoustically live venue. As such we have decided to only use Dolby 5.1 sound. This means there will be speakers for the left and right front, left and right back, and center channel audio. That might sound simple but we have a balcony. As with our live system, we need to make sure the patrons in the balcony have the same quality sound as the rest of the auditorium. For this you can see Ron and David planning out speaker positioning. If you are at the Strand you will see the new JBL cinema speakers sitting ready by each of the balcony spotlights. Those are for the rear balcony channels. We have to install new speakers under the balcony to accommodate the rear channel for the downstairs. You might have noticed 4 huge speakers being stored in our Cabaret Area (to the right). Those are for the front left and right channels. We have to have two speakers mounted down low for the downstairs, and two speakers mounted up high to fill the balcony. There will be two center channel speakers, one aimed low, the other high. These have yet to be acquired. We also will add new subwoofers under the stage for the film system. All this planning takes time. We will be doing the work ourselves with a cinetech hired to tweak the system. When finished it will be a major upgrade. The bottom line for installation of this system is that theatrical venues like the Strand will find it difficult in the future to get digital rights (what we currently show) from the film studios. DCP will be necessary. We will be ready!
***Next week we have a great concert with THE BLUE LEAF's and our Tuesday Film Series featuring JURASSIC WORLD (2015)
