Incumbent serves as Water Safety Instructor for the City of Shelbyville Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for providing swimming instruction and maintaining safety in and around the pool area.

DUTIES:
- Instructs infant to Level 7 Red Cross swimming through “hands on” and demonstrative methods.

Provides a safe and positive atmosphere for all participants.

Utilizes class time effectively and efficiently. Utilizes swim lesson equipment and puts equipment away at the end of class.

Promotes good public relations with students and families.

Completes required paperwork for swim classes, including recording and turning in daily class attendance and daily record of class progress. Turns in American Red Cross Record Sheets and Class Record Sheets and Roster at completion of each swim lesion session.

Attends all Swim Instructor Staff meetings.

Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including swimming, standing/walking for long periods, bending, reaching, handling/grasping objects, lifting/carrying moderate to heavy equipment, acute close/far vision, hearing sounds/communication, and maintaining constant alertness.
- Ability to effectively communicate in a courteous and tactful manner with co-workers, other City personnel, and pool patrons, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
- Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
- Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment on several tasks at the same time, occasionally under time pressure.
- Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and complete daily work reports.
- Ability to regularly work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.
III. RESPONSIBILITY:
- Incumbent performs duties according to standard department policies and procedures, exercising independent judgment in maintaining pool facilities, resolving disciplinary problems, and responding to medical emergencies. Unusual circumstances/problems are discussed with supervisor at incumbent’s discretion. Work is reviewed primarily for soundness of judgment, appropriate supervision of assigned operations, and attainment of goals/objectives. Errors in decision could result in loss of life or injury to self or others.

V. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Incumbent's duties involve swimming, standing/walking for long periods, bending, reaching, handling/grasping objects, lifting/carrying moderate to heavy equipment, acute close/far vision, hearing sounds/communication, and maintaining constant alertness.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Incumbent performs duties outdoors in a swimming pool and surrounding area and may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, pool chemicals, and communicable diseases, for which universal health and safety precautions must be exercised at all times to protect self and others. Incumbent regularly works extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
