Reimagining our current public spaces has the potential to provide positive social change by providing community identity, community attachment, and community collaboration. The efforts can also encourage positive economic changes within a community.

    2024 Giving & Impact
    Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the work of BRCF continues to flourish in our community. In 2024, we received over $4.3 million in gifts and established 28 new funds. To see the full list of these new funds, click HERE. Additionally, BRCF awarded approximately $3.6 million in grants to local nonprofits and scholarships to students. We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support, which helps us fulfill your charitable goals while make a lasting impact in Shelby County.
     
    WELCOME 
    New BRCF Board & Committee Members
    BRCF is excited to announce that Greg Gerline is rejoining our Board of Directors, replacing Lisa Bridges, who completed her nine-year term at the end of 2024. Greg previously served on the board from 2010 to 2019 and held the role of President in 2014 and 2015. We are thrilled to welcome him back and look forward to benefiting from his experience and expertise.

    BRCF'S IMPACT INVESTING PROGRAM
    Breaking Ground On New Initiative

    BRCF joined the City of Shelbyville - Government and Intend Indiana for a groundbreaking ceremony of the first of four new construction homes in Shelbyville as part of Intend's Affordable HomeMatters initiative. The program is designed to provide affordable housing options for low-to-moderate-income families.

    MURAL DEDICATION
    Family, Friends, and Leaders Celebrate Garrett’s Legacy
    On December 19th, family, friends, and local leaders came together to share stories of local legend Bill Garrett and to recognize the incredible legacy he left in both college basketball and in our community as we officially dedicated the mural of Garrett in downtown Shelbyville. Emceed by his great nephew, James Garrett III, the dedication was a heartwarming event where several speakers, including his children, artist Pamela Bliss, and author Tom Graham, shared how the local legend influenced their lives and the Shelbyville community.

    TOGETHER WE GIVE MATCH CAMPAIGN
    Goal Surpassed
    BRCF is thrilled to announce that the Together We Give Match Campaign has surpassed its fundraising goal, thanks to the generosity of our supporters! With over $13,000 in donations, we’ve successfully established the BRCF Scholar Alumni Alliance Scholarship Fund. This new fund will award a scholarship each year to a junior or senior in college, with the recipient selected by a committee of Scholar Alumni Alliance members.

    IN CASE YOU MISSED IT - BRCF AWARDED $5M
    Thanks to Lilly Endowment Inc.'s GIFT VIII Initiative
    BRCF has received a grant of $5M from Lilly Endowment Inc. through the Community Leadership Implementation Grants component of the eighth phase of its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VIII) initiative. This is one of 30 implementation grants being awarded through GIFT VIII, a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative designed to support the efforts of community foundations and their partners to strengthen quality of life for the people in the towns, cities, counties and regions they serve.

    REMINDER:  ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS
    Internship Opportunities Available
    BRCF is excited to offer an opportunity for college students who are members of our Scholar Alumni Alliance (BRCF scholarship recipients) to gain hands-on experience during the summer of 2025 through internships with Shelby County nonprofits. Through our nonprofit internship grant program, BRCF supports Shelby County nonprofits by providing up to $5,000 in funding to help create paid internship positions. In addition, BRCF is hiring for their next paid internship position as well. 
    This initiative not only strengthens our local nonprofits but also provides the next generation of leaders with valuable learning and career-building experiences. By applying for an internship, students have the chance to develop professional skills, network with community leaders, and contribute to meaningful projects that benefit Shelby County.

    WINTER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CYCLE
    DEADLINE REMINDER: January 15, 2025
    High school students on track to graduate by June 30, 2025, current college students, graduate students, and nontraditional students are encouraged to apply for BRCF scholarships aimed at those pursuing post-secondary credentials. One unique feature of BRCF’s application process is that only one application is completed to qualify for all scholarship opportunities for which an applicant is eligible. 
    For specific criteria, requirements, and instructions for applying, along with a list of available scholarships, please refer to the BRCF Scholarship Resource Guide located on our website under the Scholarships tab. You can also find additional details in this FLYER for prospective applicants.

    ATTENTION SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS
    Don't Forget to Complete the FAFSA
    Students applying for scholarships through BRCF must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of the application process to be considered for BRCF scholarship opportunities. As a friendly reminder, applicants must submit their Student Aid Index (SAI) from their FAFSA Submission Summary by February 15, 2025 to Julie Alvis.

    ATTENTION ARTISTS!
    Calls for Art

    BRCF is seeking Shelby County High School student artwork to add to The Alley in Downtown Shelbyville. Students can enter up to two pieces of two-dimensional artwork to be considered. The artwork must be original (new or existing) and in acrylic, watercolor, oil, mixed media, etc. Up to three selections will be made. Submissions are due on January 15, 2025 (11:59pm). Learn More.
    BRCF is seeking proposals from artists to create a mural that is intended to raise awareness about local bird species, with a focus on those identified as having ‘High Vulnerability’ and ‘Moderate Vulnerability’ due to climate change. The mural will be located at the corner of John St. and Walker St.; Shelbyville IN 46176 *Knauf Insulation PropertySubmissions are due on February 14, 2025 (11:59pm). Learn More.
     
    BRCF announces a call for artists’ designs to transform utility cabinets in Shelby County into public artworks. Utility boxes are a simple and effective way to infuse our community with public art.  Artists’ designs will be printed on vinyl and wrapped around Shelbyville and Shelby County utility cabinets. Submissions are due on February 14, 2025 (11:59pm). Learn more.

    Bill Garrett Community Fund

    Type: Community (unrestricted) Fund
    This fund was established by Indiana University under the leadership of Pamela Whitten to memorialize the legacy of Bill Garrett. To learn more about Bill Garrett and his legacy click HERE

    BRCF INITIATIVES
    The Dolly Parton Imagination Library program provides a free book monthly for children ages 0-5.  BRCF administers this opportunity in Shelby County thanks in part to the Shelby County Imagination Library fund established by donors.
